The THRIV3 Vehicle and Towing course is a practical, hands-on staff training program covering the safe operation of organisation vehicles and trailers. Delivered beside the actual vehicle and trailer with a THRIV3 trainer, the course works through three modules: full pre-trip vehicle inspection, correct trailer connection, and safe driving while towing.

Participants learn how to identify and report vehicle faults, complete fluid and tyre checks, couple a trailer correctly with safety chains and electrical connections, and operate a vehicle safely while towing under a range of road and weather conditions. The course aligns with NSW road rules and THRIV3 work health and safety procedures.

On successful completion, participants are able to inspect, connect, and tow with a THRIV3 vehicle without supervision. Refresher training is required every 12 months.

The following units will be included in your certificate:

P00966 - THRIV3 Vehicle and Towing Training

Course Delivery

This course can be delivered/assessed in the workplace or at facility organised by the training provider.

Course Durations

Course durations can vary for multiple reasons, so the durations below are the minimum possible amount.

Face-to-Face face-to-face contact time of at least 4 Hours

This course is available to internal THRIV3 staff, as well as members, volunteers, and partners involved in THRIV3 projects, programs, or activities.

Participants must:

  • Hold a current Australian driver licence valid for the class of vehicle being operated.
  • Be physically capable of completing pre-trip inspections, including walking around the vehicle, opening the bonnet, and operating the jockey wheel and coupling.
  • Be authorised by their THRIV3 supervisor or project lead to operate a THRIV3 vehicle and trailer.

This certificate has an industry recommended renewal period of 12 months

Assessment is conducted by direct observation in a real work environment, beside the actual vehicle and trailer. The participant must demonstrate competency in every task before sign-off is recorded. There are no written exams and no shortcuts.

Module 1 - Vehicle Pre-Trip Inspection

  • Complete a walk-around inspection and identify any visible faults.
  • Check all four tyres and the spare for tread, pressure, and damage.
  • Check engine oil, coolant, brake fluid, windscreen washer fluid, and the battery.
  • Confirm interior systems, vehicle documents, and required equipment.
  • Respond correctly to a simulated fault: identify, refuse to drive, report, and log.

Module 2 - Trailer Connection

  • Position the trailer and lower the coupling onto the tow ball correctly.
  • Confirm the coupling is locked using the lift test.
  • Fit the locking pin or padlock.
  • Connect both safety chains crossed under the coupling using rated shackles.
  • Connect the electrical plug and confirm all trailer lights operate correctly.
  • Raise and secure the jockey wheel.
  • Complete final pre-departure checks.

Module 3 - Driving and Operating a Vehicle While Towing

  • Pull away smoothly with a loaded trailer attached.
  • Take corners and complete turns with appropriate clearance.
  • Demonstrate progressive braking and use of engine braking on a downhill section.
  • Reverse the trailer in a controlled space with a spotter, using clear hand signals.
  • Manage hills, including downshifting before the climb and using engine braking on the descent.
  • Respond correctly to a verbal scenario describing trailer sway.

Verbal questioning

Throughout the course, the trainer or assessor will ask verbal questions to confirm understanding of:

  • NSW maximum towing speed and the conditions that require slower speeds.
  • The correct response to a vehicle fault discovered during inspection.
  • Safety chain rating and shackle requirements.
  • Fatigue management on long trips.
  • What to do if something goes wrong on the road.

Sign-off

Each module is signed and dated by both the participant and the trainer or assessor once competency has been demonstrated. A final competency sign-off table is completed once all three modules are signed off, confirming the participant is competent to inspect, connect, and tow with a THRIV3 vehicle without supervision.
